After months of planning, and hundreds of phone calls and emails (by a small but dedicated!) group of volunteers, the Friends of Montgomery Hills 2024 Street Fest is finally here this Saturday! We can’t wait to welcome all of you to the Fest to enjoy music, local food, beer, and wine, local artists and businesses, government agencies, community organizations, elected officials, and kids activities. See more information on our Street Fest page.
While we can’t wait to see you at the Fest, we also have a request of all of you, to help us with Why We Fest!
#FixGeorgiaAvenue
FOMH is dedicated to the beautification, placemaking, and safety of the “Gateway to Silver Spring” – the Montgomery Hills corridor of Georgia Avenue in Montgomery County, Maryland. We have many goals and activities in support of that mission, but the most urgent and most impactful in the short term is to ensure that the Georgia Avenue Safety and Accessibility Project gets fully funded and is not further delayed.
Since at least 2005, Montgomery County has consistently identified the Georgia Avenue Safety and Accessibility Project in Montgomery Hills as one of—if not *the* most—critical transportation projects in the County’s Transportation Priorities Letter to the Governor, the Maryland Department of Transportation, and the Montgomery County State Delegation.
Nineteen years later, these essential improvements remain unfinished. Despite recent progress in design and engineering, the project has lost its construction funding due to recent budget cuts. For the residents and businesses in Montgomery Hills, this outcome undermines the integrity of the transportation priorities process. While budget constraints are understandable, it is wholly unacceptable that a project deemed the County’s top priority for nearly two decades remains unfunded and incomplete.
Therefore, we are asking you all to join us in signing on to the below letter, directed to state and Montgomery County electeds and officials, demanding that they together find the way to allocate and restore construction funding to this project without delay. If there are other ways you would like to help FOMH on this important topic, please reach out to us at friendsofmontgomeryhills@gmail.com.
